  • My friend's 3 year old appears to have no natural fear of things. When
they came to my house, she walked straight into my swimming pool without
any hesitation. Fortunately her mother caught her but she continued to
pull away and run in every direction. When is spanking appropriate to
teach a child safety boundaries? Is it ever?

ANSWER-- provided by Kris Walpus, LMHP, RPT
Yes, corporal punishment or spanking can be appropriate for a child of 2
years & older to teach them safe boundaries. Some good guidelines &
those set by the Child Protection Agency of NE for corporal punishment or
    spanking are as follows:
  • ·Open hand with no rings, watches or bracelets
  • ·Must be on a child's clothed buttocks to knee region of the body
  • No twisting of arms or limbs may be used to control or hold a child,
    ONLY whole body holds
Spanking is a parental strategy that when used correctly can quickly
redirect or stop a child's dangerous behaviors before they become
    seriously injured or hurt.
